MSMEs are categorized based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover:
- Micro Enterprises: Investment up to Rs. 1 crore and turnover up to Rs. 5 crore
- Small Enterprises: Investment up to Rs. 10 crore and turnover up to Rs. 50 crore
- Medium Enterprises: Investment up to Rs. 50 crore and turnover up to Rs. 250 crore
For existing enterprises registered before June 30, 2020, re-registration on the Udyam portal is mandatory.

- MSME registration is a completely self-declaration based process.
- MSME registration is a paperless, completely online process which is absolutely free of cost.
- No documents and proofs are required to be uploaded for the registration of an MSME.
- Aadhaar Number is enough to register an enterprise under Udyam registration.
- Only one Udyam registration can be filed for an enterprise.
- It is integrated with the Income Tax Department and GSTIN systems and all the details can be retrieved.
- Enterprises that have already done UAM registration online, or any other registration granted by the Ministry of MSME, will be required to renew/ migrate their registration.
- If anyone tries to intentionally misrepresent the facts and figures in the Udyam Registration shall be punishable with fine and penalties specified under section 27 of the act.
