  1. 1. Introduction

    GST (Goods and Services Tax ), an indirect tax levied on goods and services that are consumed in India. This indirect tax has replaced many other indirect taxes in India, such as services tax, turnover tax, VAT, excise duty etc. GST brought the concept of “One Nation One Tax” in the country. GST came into force from 1st July, 2017 and it became mandatory for all buyers, sellers, and service providers to register. All those who are eligible under GST must register themselves through the GST portal created by the GOI. Once registered you will get a unique registration number called GSTIN.

    • If you are a taxpayer who was registered under the older tax regime

  4. 4. Documents Required for Proprietorship
    • PAN Card of the Proprietor
    • Address Proof of the Proprietor (e.g., Aadhaar, Passport, Driving License, etc.)
    • Passport-Size Photograph of the Proprietor
    • Copy of Electricity/Water Bill of the Business premises
    • Rent Agreement and NOC from the Owner (if the office is rented)
  5. 5. Documents Required for Partnership
    • Photograph and Id Proof of all partners.
    • Address proof of partners (Passport, driving license, Voters identity card, Aadhar card etc.)
    • Bank Details (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
    • Latest electricity bill of the premises
    • Rent agreement and NOC from owner (if premises are rented)
    • Partnership Deed
  6. 6. Documents Required for Company
    • PAN card of company
    • Certificate of Incorporation
    • Articles of Association, AOA
    • Memorandum of Association, MOA
    • Identity proof, address proof and photographs of directors
    • Resolution signed by board members
    • Bank Details (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
    • Latest electricity bill of the premises

  7. 7. Documents Required for HUF
    • HUF PAN Card
    • Proof of address of the HUF
    • Karta's ID Proof and Photograph
    • Family Deed (if available)
    • Bank Details (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
  8. 8. Registration Process

    GST Registration is a long process that involves submission of many business details and documents. Anyone that becomes liable to obtain GST registration should get a GST registration within 30 days from the date they become liable. To register for GST on the Government site, one should follow the steps given below carefully -

    • Step 1:Documentation
    • Step 2: Initiate Registration
    • Step 3: OTP Verification
    • Step 4: TRN Generation
    • Step 5: Complete GST REG-01 (Part B)
    • Step 6: Submission
    • Step 7: Verification & Approval by Department

    After successfully filling out both parts of the application process, the application is finally submitted on the portal. It takes around 10-15 days to process the application, if the authorities are satisfied with your application they will issue you a GST registration Certificate as well as a GST Identification number.

  9. 9. Penalties
    • If the offender fails to pay or underpays the tax owed erroneously, then the penalty is 10% of the tax amount  or Rs. 10,000, whichever is higher.
    • The penalty will be at 100% of the tax amount due when the offender has not filed for GST registration with the intention to purposefully avoid it.
