  1. 1. Overview

In India, individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) and business-firms are required to have a Permanent Account Number (PAN). PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department to Indian taxpayers. This code is used to track taxable income and transactions. It acts as a database for all individual transactions, enabling the department to link and identify tax-related activities. PAN is also used to track TCS/TDS credits, income tax payments, return on gifts/investments/wealth, etc.

Notes

  • Once the application submission has been checked and processed, the PAN card will be sent to you by registered mail. In the past, it would take between 15-20 business days to receive the PAN card, but now you can expect to receive it within two days. Make sure you are home when it is delivered as the post office may return it if no one is there to receive it. If that happens, you will need to repeat the process.
